December Article
Messiah
The Hilliard Arts Council will sponsor their annual performance of
the Christmas portion of George Frederick Handel’s “The Messiah”
on Sunday December 9 at the Northwest United Methodist Church. The
church is located on Riverside Drive just south of Henderson Road.
The chorus and soloists will be accompanied by harpsichord and
string ensemble. The vocal soloists for this year will be; soprano,
Cheryl Partlow; alto, Lisa Long; tenor, Mark Wilson; and bass,
Steve Hines. The concert is free to the public.
Five By Design Concert
The nation’s premier vocal ensemble Five By Design will be returning to
Hilliard on February 10 at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center of
Hilliard Davidson High School. This will be the second time the
Hilliard Arts Council has brought this outstanding vocal group
to our community.
Since 1994, Five By Design and its unique Broadway-styled retrospectives
have toured extensively appearing at performing art centers, theaters,
festivals, casinos and with symphony orchestras including our own Columbus
Symphony. The vocal five-some has appeared with more than 160 symphony
orchestras and 400 performing art centers throughout the United States
and Canada.
This year the group, accompanied by a 12 piece big band, will present
their production STAY TUNED. Five By Design tunes in to such programming
as “Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows”, “The Dinah Shore-Chevy Show”,
“Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall” and Milton Berle’s “Texaco Star Theatre”
drawing upon those television pioneers that came from vaudeville, radio,
motion pictures, classical music and Broadway. Remember the hits
“Sh-Boom”, “Swingin’ On A Star”, “The Tennessee Waltz” and “Papa Loves
Mambo”? Five By Design’s STAY TUNED is an affectionate glimpse into
American culture from 1950 to 1966. All tickets for this performance
will be reserved. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for senior citizens
and students. In order to hopefully fill the auditorium for this
performance there is a $5 discount for all tickets ordered by
January 20. Tickets can be ordered by calling 527-4407 or by
e-mail at KBrenneman@HilliardArtsCouncil.org.
HAC Funding
Lastly, I wish to speak to a recent article that appeared in another
local newspaper. The article reported on a budget committee meeting
of Hilliard City Council. It appeared from reading the article that
certain members of City Council were questioning the arts council
and its funding. Fortunately, it was actually a miscommunication.
I was gratified to receive phone calls from both Bill Uttley, City
Council president and the Mayor assuring me of City Council’s
support for the Arts Council. Perhaps if the author of the article
had contacted me first, the entire incident might have been avoided.
In the end, the article may have had a positive effect since it
highlighted the existence of the Arts Council and gives us a chance
to communicate with City Council about our activities.
